Hot of the bench this evening is this trio of men’s rings. Including my first ever Killiecrankie Man Ring (I’m pretty sure it’s my first! Set so many now) To my friends who got a sneak peek the other night, you might notice I modified it a bit! These I have made for men in larger sizes but I do this style for women too I totally love to see men wearing jewellery and I just don’t get the chance to do many men’s customs so I’m releasing a few into the galleries. Couldn’t resist adopting this parcel of dirty little Aquas!! Heavily included, some are cloudy but I found them very intriguing and could see something evolving from this lot. Especially love the bigger one! Every time I look at this lot they remind me of a photo I saw of the aqua waters of the Tarn in fog. The tarn is an unusual disappearing lake which only fills after heavy rain. It’s on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington in Hobart. It has been rejuvenated by the big Tassie Storms we just had. The water is the most crystal clear aqua. I hope to get to see it one day with my own eyes! One of my first free faceted (is that a thing?) stones set in this very chunky silver ring. Very pale amethyst with natural inclusions. Faceted front and partially on the back leaving areas of where the crystal was broken from its cluster. Im so new at this and I need heaps of practice but I’m really happy with this one and it’s the start of more to come! Ok here’s the one I was setting the other day. Australian star sapphire. It looks a steely grey but in natural light is shows a teal colour and several stars. I thought the little treated blue diamond was a nice little highlight. Hard to capture in the photos but this sapphire is mesmerising!!! Set in yellow and rose golds with a sterling silver band. Tool marked and oxidised. Almost ready to find a special home. Driftwood and broomstick Shellac Sticks! This is what I use to hold earrings and smaller pendants when I set their stones. The Shellac is melted, the earring pressed into it then it’s left to cool and harden. It gives me a handle to hold while I use another tool to push the metal against the stone. There is a lot of strength, concentration and control that goes into setting a stone……and sometimes a few more grey hairs from stress? one slip and it’s all over!! I had the perfect smooth piece of driftwood in the workshop so I used it to make two new sticks. Big day of setting today! Thanks to Mum and Dad for the school holiday babysitting and the home made morning tea️ Wish me luck? #setting #makedo #handmadetools #handmadejewellery #handmade

A peek at a new designs I’m making for some earrings. The narrow stem is inspired by the knife edge wire used in Edwardian era jewellery. It looks thin but actually comes to a taper at the front and is wider at the back. Stems are silver which I’ve blackened and left tool marks. The hooks and settings are gold. Set with stunning Killiecrankie Diamonds/Topaz from Flinders Island Tasmania. You could dress these up or wear them every day! 12ct rough Killiecrankie Diamond with the back slightly faceted. I cut and polished the back because that part of it had some unattractive fractures and a dirty look. The surface exhibits the natural worn facets of the crystal. It’s an amazing stone and I might regret not keeping this one for myself? Set in free-formed silver bands with a finer gold wire band. For those who do not know, this is Topaz which comes from The Flinders Island Region of Tasmania. The turquoise from Shiyan Hubei China is stabilised for hardness and I I have been told it is colour should be natural but I love it regardless. The blue/mauve chalcedony is from Africa and the Chrysocolla is from Arizona both natural. So on Friday I also finished this lovely chunky silver Killiecrankie Diamond/Topaz ring. It’s the one with the lovely inclusions a few posts back, I’ve included those photos here. They didn’t show up photos since after I had the stone. In real life you can only just see them if you look really hard. I think they’ll show up more as the ring ages and the silver setting interior dulls a bit. Awesome stone. A bit irregular in shape but I tried to get the setting to look as symmetrical as I could. The setting part is slightly tapered with a high polish and light texture just around the rim of the stone. This ties in well with the tool marked band. Totally silver. I didn’t feel the desire to ad any gold to this one. It’s beautifully bright, white and pure The stone is completely colourless but you can see a lot of colour reflections in the pics. Mark is very talented as a writer and a fellow jewellery maker and he chose me to be part of his book and I really dont know the right words to thank him enough!! Wow!!! So it turned out two other very amazingly talented ladies who live close by were also in the book so we decided to get together for a mini book launch!! Hens the crazy selfie? it was soooo exciting to all look through our books together for the first time and find our page! It felt like we had all been friends for ages! Thank you so much Mark for your masterpiece! And thank you Sophie Carnell and Melissa Baldock for celebrating with me! Trying my hand at a bit of free form faceting. This is very exciting for me! It’s something I have wanted to do for many years. I like to try to get into the minds of the ancient gemstone cutters and imagine what it would be like cutting each facet by hand without fancy machines. I’m very fortunate to have a machine to help me. It does looks pretty ancient but I’m so lucky to have come across it. I have no desire to make calibrated cuts though, I’ll leave that to the experts!! This is super fun! I love how the topaz on the left came out!!

I oiled the wood on the draws and it came up a treat! The draws are amazing! I have one just dedicated to hammers and mandrels! So much less clutter on the bench top. The top one I believe is topaz with the slightest icy blue tinge and the pear shape one a stunning blue sapphire. Together they had fossicked and found the gems in Tasmania and then travelled together and had them cut. One of the cool things about being a crafts person is making your own tools when you need them. This morning I made a claw setter out of a rusty old nail. I made it for a very special occasion for @theempressandwolf I went all out with this gigantic and most beautifully cut Killiecrankie Diamond surrounded by four baby ones. This topaz is set in one of my favourite designs I call Goddess Rings. When I make a ring like this I like to think about how special I hope it makes its wearer feelThank you very much to the new owner! Hope you just love it! A big shout out to all the creative people working late tonight …..or now Monday morning?As hard as it will be to get up in the morning it was totally worth it! This is the stage where I blackened everything before a polish and setting then polishing again tomorrow. I’m changing the saying to: If you love your job you’ll never NOT work a day in your life I live and breath my job/trade/passion every second of my life and my mind never stops ticking. I totally get what that original saying means though! But there’s a great deal of blood, sweat and tears and late nights and burning the candle at both ends and I love it! I feel very fortunate to have a job where I make pretty shiny things that make people happy! That’s what drives me #workinglate #creativepeople #driven #lovemyjob #greatjob #handcrafted

I don’t want to know how many more grey hairs I got for setting these!! 14 stones set yesterday and today? Teeth clenching work! It is probably the most stressful but at the same time satisfying parts of my work. The adrenalin, nerves and focus is intense!! Phew! Unfortunately two small fatalities but luckily had replacements. Sometimes you just can’t predict how a stone is going to behave during setting. It takes everything out of me! I need a holiday # # #satisfaction #setting #lovemyjob #handcraft #stress #finished #jewellerymaking
