Arriving @findcollective in Hobart today is this lovely Queensland White Topaz ring I’m in love with far North Queensland after our little family holiday up there last month! It was a beautiful way to break up our cold Tassie Winter! Our first holiday in 10 years and now refreshed and inspired and saving for the next one……hopefully before the next decade passes This simple ring has an Ancient hand made feel. I have kept and made tool marks for texture. The little gold granules give the white on the stone and silver a little warmth. It has an already lived in feel. Remember this one? Well it’s all finished and now displayed @findcollective in Salamanca Arts Centre Hobart. I wanted it really dark and the finish came out better than I’d hoped! The bigger stone is Queensland White Topaz with a special Needle inclusion. Swipe to see it magnified through a loupe. An absolutely stunning cut I would have liked to set in a ring but it was way to deep which would mean it would sit really high off the finger. Although I managed to make this pendant look quite low profile with that stepped edge. The small stone is of course a Tasmanian Killiecrankie Diamond/Topaz. This lovely natural Blue Topaz from Sri Lanka is more amazing in real life. It has bands of clear white through it so as you move it you get a beautiful bi colour effect. This one has some texture on the Rose Gold setting as well as the band this time! The long oval sits beautifully across the finger. My third new flat graver in 27 years. This is what I use to tidy up the metal in the lip of settings. They eventually get shorter and shorter. The one at the front is the new one and I’ve just set it into its handle and ground down the length to almost half the original size. This is to fit the length of my thumb when I hold it. The handle sits in my palm and I use my hand to carefully push and cut the metal. They need to be an immaculately sharp and highly polished for best results. DARK MOFO Has definitely kicked of in Hobart!! It’s very exciting! DARK MOFO makes the city and now many surrounding areas come alive in winter with a warm red glow and so much art and excitement in a time when we would otherwise feel be feeling the dead of winter and be hibernating inside by the fire. Celebrating this I made this pair of Garnet earrings! The large rough half garnet crystals are from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia and the round sparkly garnets are from the Northern Territory, Australia and found by my Friend and long time Gem supplier Darren from @dazlyngems . In fitting with the rough crystals I have made the Sterling Silver settings rugged and tool marked with an antiqued finish and added Gold hooks for a warm look. I’m up late procrastinating in the studio and in between that I’ve actually been working?Been quite productive surprisingly! Decided to answer some messages which in turn got me to look through all my stones and get lost in la la land…. meanwhile my wood heater has nearly gone out three times and now I’m taking photos of things like this pretty natural pale pink Australian Zircon I have no intention of setting in the near future because I have to finish all my other jobs? but its really pretty isn’t it! #pink #pretty #australiangemstones #zircon #pinkzircon #procrastinating

This ones has taken the longest time to create even though it’s such a simple design!! I’m sure when it finds a home the owner will appreciate what went into this one. Most of the stones I use are not calibrated ie: not standard sizes or shapes which means custom made settings are a must. This one I have tapered by hand. And dimpled the surface like a beaten copper bowl just for decoration. Sometimes these form up quite easily and some are excruciatingly time consuming I had to put this one aside to focus on finishing other pieces but I’ve picked it up again this week. This is my massive Crocodile Eye ring!! It was very hard to capture the Iris and pupil in a photo but if you google Crocodile eyes you might understand what I see. This ring is totally designed around the stone reminding me of a Crocs eye and then modelling the ring around it. The design evolved a lot over a few designs. I really didn’t hold back with this one! It’s the sort of piece I put soooo much time in and don’t care how long it hangs around for to find the right owner because I love it! It kind of reminds me of an American Indian design. Although that was not intentional. It’s all silver with elaborate reticulated gold panels above and below the stone. Don’t ask me why The eye is from Queensland and is a piece of Malachite in Jasper I cut from a slab sawn from rough rock. I’d say this is the piece that has got my creative juices flowing this year. It’s time consuming evolution was well worth it for me! That saying “kid in a lolly shop” is an understatement compared to how excited I was at the Hobart Gem and Mineral Show over the weekend!!!!!! Australia is famous for its Opals, Sapphires and pink Argyle Diamonds to name a few which I absolutely love!!!! But isn’t this Chrysocolla from Queensland simply stunning!! Before I started cutting rocks I didn’t even know Australia had Chrysocolla or even Turquoise. Understanding they come from the copper rich areas it makes sense to me now. I just can’t believe these stones are not well known as an Australian Mineral! I allowed myself the time to do some cutting today. First time in ages!!!!! Who’s in Hobart today? This one made it off the bench late last night all finished one of my many new creations for 2019! I’m still pricing it but I’ve bought it to work with me today and it’s on display in my cabinet @findcollective in the Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart. It’s Killiecrankie Topaz just under 5 carats set in 9ct Rose Gold with a sterling silver band. About a size Q. Well school for Tasmania started back Wednesday and my little girl started high school for the first time! I’m a proud mum! So I’m two days and two nights into my creative month I promised myself before I start any new commissions! I’m hoping to replenish my galleries with lots of new treasures! I have parts of pieces I started last year and have started way too many new bits and pieces. My brain is working much faster with ideas than I can physically make things so I’m getting all the ideas at least started but they’re going to take a long time to finish. I can’t believe how much metal I’ve chewed through already! Hope I can stay really motivated! I also have my second job two days a week so I’m always burning the candles at both ends but seem to be achieving lots and it’s so rewarding! This is a stunning little natural Apatite. It will eventually feature in a pendant because it’s a softer gem and not as suitable for a ring. It’s so striking blue in real life it almost looks fake! So it’s been sitting around for years waiting for me to create something to show off it’s natural beauty. I get it out to try to pair up with a larger stone every now and again but it soon gets but back in it’s box as it colour just makes everything else look dull! I’m starting to think it might look great with a colourless Topaz. Then it will just pop! Yeah!!! It’s been a while since I made this style chain. I really enjoy making the odd sized free form links! There’s something therapeutic about chain making! I like to use a large bolt ring clasp on these big chains. That way you can still add a pendant to the clasp to mix it up a bit. FIND is a not for profit community arts organisation run by its ten talented Tasmanian gold and silversmiths and art jewellers. Feeling very welcomed! This is the finished result of a ring I showed in the making a few posts down. The peridot is so beautifully vibrant and I set it off with a tiny green diamond. The settings and the finer details are rich 18ct Yellow gold with a chunky free formed sterling silver band and spirals. This ring reminds me of the sea and it’s creatures. Little studs about to have a bath after polishing. I love making these. I first made some like this a couple of years ago for Edge2 Isthmus Exhibition where a group of artists examined and interpreted our local geological formations into their work. Time consuming but lovely results. I finished some others before these and my Dad chose a pair for Mums Birthday! Happy Birthday Mum️ She wore them out to lunch with us today and they looked so good on her! These ones are titanium set in silver and gold. The contrast of the titanium with the precious metal is beautiful! I have used local Dolorite rock to imprint the titanium for texture. I decided to ease into Monday with some colour therapy! I havnt given myself much rock cutting time for a while. Shame the long one has had a fracture show up at the final polish so it will get cut into two. These are Australian rocks, left Crysocolla and Jasper, right Crysocolla and Malachite as well as a host of other minerals I’m sure! The colour is like the ocean meeting the rocky shore. Stunning! I cut these keeping as much original rough shape as possible. It will be blackened in the deep areas and set in a pendant. I wish I had it finished in time to wear to Dark Mofo in Hobart!! I’m volunteering at an amazing exhibition called Invisible House featuring the work of some incredible artists!
